On the other hand, it is now becoming clear whether it will be possible to permanently integrate accessibility into the regular operational and development process. This aspect is often underestimated: While significant investments are made in the accessible design of individual applications, the same level of commitment to structurally embedding accessibility is rarely applied. Only when accessibility is implemented sustainably across the entire system can applications remain accessible in the long term.

If this integration is neglected, various consequences are foreseeable. Firstly, feedback from market surveillance authorities is to be expected as soon as they conduct their audits or receive complaints. Secondly, considerable additional effort will be required in the long run: If applications are further developed for one or two years without considering accessibility, or if new applications are launched without the necessary requirements, setbacks will occur. In such cases, the work often has to be restarted almost entirely, which is neither efficient nor sensible.

There are also relevant developments in the United States. Regardless of the current political framework, new deadlines have been set under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). By mid-April, applications or websites covered by the ADA – especially those of federal public institutions – must be accessible. According to the ADA, compliance with WCAG 2.1 remains mandatory, as it is enshrined in law. There is currently no obligation to implement WCAG 2.2. Nevertheless, the pressure to meet the requirements on time is high. It can be assumed that procedures for monitoring compliance exist in the USA – similar to those in the European Union.

From today's perspective, however, their widespread and reliable implementation seems questionable. A key problem is that such AI agents must guarantee 100% reliability for critical tasks. Furthermore, a sufficiently robust data foundation is often lacking to execute specific actions correctly and securely on unfamiliar websites. AI-powered browser solutions already exist – for example, from OpenAI or Perplexity – based on Chrome. In practice, however, their use appears to be limited, which underscores doubts about their current maturity and reliability.

A more realistic use case could lie in highly domain-specific scenarios. If an AI agent were specifically trained on a particular website, such as to execute a transfer at a specific bank, it could reliably perform such processes after a one-time training. In such clearly defined contexts, functional use is quite foreseeable.

So-called skills are already well-established, for example, for services like Spotify. These skills enable largely voice- or text-based control, such as through commands like "Play album X." These functionalities are not revolutionary, but they represent significant added value, especially for visually impaired or blind people. From their perspective, Spotify is considered a complex application because its navigation presents numerous obstacles due to its structural lack of clarity. While these barriers are not as pronounced for users without visual, motor, or cognitive impairments, usability is often considerably limited for people with visual impairments. Improved voice or text control can provide noticeable relief in these cases.

Accessibility Overlays are another trend that continues to be prominently discussed. These are tools that promise to make websites accessible using integrated functions. In practice, however, many of these solutions contain hardly any substantial AI components. It is conceivable that such systems will acquire or integrate more powerful AI-based modules in the future, perhaps only in the area of ​​Easy to Read or plain language.

Accessibility Overlays are another trend that continues to be prominently discussed. The interesting question in 2026 will be whether providers succeed in meaningfully and effectively integrating actual AI capabilities.

From a technological perspective, this would be possible in principle. An overlay system could, for example, be specifically trained on the target website, including typical patterns, relevant components, and the corporate design. In such a scenario, improvements beyond rudimentary adjustments like alternative color schemes, dark mode switching, font sizes, or font changes would certainly be conceivable. Such basic functions have existed for decades and do not, on their own, justify the acquisition of corresponding tools. Whether accessibility overlays will integrate more complex AI functions in the future is fundamentally a question of investment willingness. Many providers certainly have the capital, but it is flowing into marketing and suing critics. More crucial, however, is whether the market generates sufficient pressure. Since existing overlay solutions are commercially successful despite their conceptual limitations, established providers currently have little compelling incentive to develop qualitatively new AI functionalities. Unless a new competitor emerges that integrates AI significantly more effectively and thus offers a clear quality advantage, no substantial progress is to be expected in the short term.

AI-Based Tests

The field of AI-supported testing could become more relevant. Large accessibility providers such as Level Access and Deque are actively working on corresponding technologies. Public communication often suggests that AI-based tests will soon achieve substantial quality improvements. In practice, however, it can be observed that the vast majority of tests are still based on rule-based procedures. The few functions that are based on AI models currently offer only limited added value and are also, in many cases, not precise enough.

Nevertheless, the analytical functions for recognizing visual and structural elements on user interfaces are continuing to evolve. One example is the ability to have the screen content described using TalkBack on Android. The descriptions of the visual structure are already remarkably sophisticated. Advances in this area could, in the medium term, enable improvements in automated contrast analysis—an area that regularly causes problems. This particularly concerns text-to-background contrasts, icon contrasts, graphic representations, and the visibility of keyboard focus indicators. Improved AI-supported analyses would provide relief here, but would only address a small part of the requirements for digital accessibility.

It remains to be seen whether the decisive technological breakthrough will be achieved in 2026. Providers who overcome this hurdle first would undoubtedly have a substantial market advantage. Currently, however, no clear development is discernible.

Multimodal Interfaces

Another area concerns the development of multimodal forms of interaction, especially speech-based interfaces. Here, too, the forecast should be viewed with caution. With the advent of Amazon Alexa around ten years ago, it was predicted that voice control would become the dominant interface. Similar predictions exist for text-based prompting as the central interaction paradigm. While the latter seems plausible, at least insofar as many users increasingly consume AI-generated overviews instead of complete websites, the breakthrough of voice-based interfaces remains questionable.

Voice control is still prone to misinterpretations. Furthermore, users are deeply accustomed to established methods of operation such as keyboard or touch interactions. These behavioral patterns cannot be changed in the short term, so a widespread shift to voice interfaces in 2026 seems rather unlikely.

Overall, it remains to be seen whether new interaction patterns will establish themselves that enable better or more inclusive use of digital systems. This would be particularly interesting in the area of ​​voice-based interfaces. Currently, we do not see any clear developments in this area. Siri at Apple, for example, could make progress in the future through the integration of Gemini; a potential boost is conceivable, but we will have to wait and see.

In general, AI has not yet become established as an interaction pattern on smartphones or computers. While there are examples like Microsoft Copilots, widespread use has not yet occurred because the concrete added value for most users is still lacking. It remains to be seen when practical and intuitive usage scenarios will be developed.

Another relevant topic is the simplified operation of graphical user interfaces. Among other things, the possibility of automated, simple gestures is being discussed, which would particularly benefit people with motor impairments. Concrete trends are currently difficult to discern, especially in the smartphone sector. Nevertheless, there are approaches to improving the overall usability of devices.

A particularly promising trend is the dynamic adaptation of designs to individual user needs. Several years ago, for example in an article by Jakob Nielsen entitled "Accessibility Has Failed," the vision was outlined that generative AI will dynamically adapt interfaces to the needs of users in the future. This development has only been partially realized so far, but it shows initial signs of progress. Modern technologies such as variable fonts, for example, allow font types to be dynamically adjusted without compromising the layout or readability of the content. In this way, users can use their preferred fonts while the user interface remains functionally and aesthetically consistent.Similar approaches are already visible in design customization: Dark mode is now standard in almost all major applications. Support for system settings that allow for larger font sizes, reduced color palettes, or simplified animations is also gaining importance. A clear trend is emerging: developers and

administrators are actively supporting these customizations. Websites offer particularly great potential in this regard, as careful design allows them to be flexibly adapted to individual user needs. It will therefore be interesting to see how this topic develops in 2026.

I am convinced that significant progress is being made in the area of ​​design options and user interface customization. The further development of CSS plays a central role in this. CSS offers ever more possibilities for flexibly designing the layout and design of websites. While CSS 2.1 was relatively simple, CSS 3 is now very complex and opens up numerous new options. Crucially, these modern CSS properties must be supported by browsers—which is currently the case—and developers and designers must stay up-to-date. So far, demand for such tests is still limited, and most of the consultants I'm in contact with receive hardly any inquiries in this area. Nevertheless, 2026 could mark the beginning of a wider adoption of such tests, even if widespread adoption is not expected.

The future remains exciting

In summary, 2026 will be a year in which numerous developments in the field of digital accessibility will continue to emerge. Trends such as dynamic interface adaptations, improved usability through CSS, increased use of AI in analysis and testing procedures, and the integration of user testing could set new standards. I'm eager to see how these developments will be implemented and how quickly they will find their way into users' everyday lives.
